Two veteran Utah food and drink names celebrate landmark birthdays this month

Squatter’s Pub in downtown Salt Lake City is proudly celebrating 35 years in the biz today (September 5th). To mark the occasion brewmaster Jason Stock has produced an extra special “89 Barleywine Ale”, which should now be on sale at Squatters.

The substantial brew weighs in at 8% ABV and was crafted with additional in-bottle aging in mind. Stock says, “This English-style barley wine is meant to be aged and will become even more rounded and smooth in the years to come. We hope you’ll hold on to a bottle (or two) for special occasions and anniversaries like the one we brewed it for.”

Inside the bottle? Stock told me, “English Maris Otter malt was used to make the backbone of this beer and Fuggle hops add a subtle herbal/earthy character. A supporting cast of specialty malts, including rye malt, and molasses provide a deep mahogany/red color and a complex flavor and aroma with heavy notes of dates and raisins.”

Also marking the big date, from Thursday 5th through Sunday 9th, 16-ounce beers on tap at the brewpub downtown will be priced at just $3.50, with guests also able to take their 35th-anniversary glass home for $3.00 – while supplies last.

Tres Hombres

Another storied local name celebrating a huge milestone this month – this Millcreek Mexican spot. As Summer winds down, the neighborhood landmark is celebrating four decades of successful business. What that in mind the restaurant is offering a special three-course meal for just $40 from now until September 15th. This deal includes a shared app, two entrees, and a shared dessert.

Apps include quesadillas, flautas, and nachos, while entree selections include burritos, enchiladas and other specialties such as carnitas and fajitas. You can learn more at treshombrescantina.com/40

The Post District-based restaurant has now extended its brunch offering. Sunday brunch first rolled out on the menu in the Summer of 2023 – with this month now seeing Saturday added as an option too. For my money, it’s one of the best brunches in town – top tip: try the bloody Mary. You can find out more about the UG brunch service in this piece I penned on the launch of their original brunch menu.

Another of my favorite restaurants in the valley has also made some big changes. The restaurant has now moved South across Millcreek, and with it, is now offering a streamlined dining option. The new location is more modestly sized and primed as a neighborhood to-go / delivery option. That said the restaurant still retains some seating for those wishing to dine in.

As a reminder, here’s why the menu at this spot is one of my favorites; and yes, those fabulous boat noodles pictured above, they’re still on the newly retooled menu.

Tupelo

With an impending trip to NYC and the James Beard Foundation on the cards for this Park City eatery, the restaurant is now delivering three signature menu items over the following weeks to mark the adventure. Classics fron the first week include:

  • Compressed Green River melon, pickled rind, Gold Creek feta, basil, mint
  • Spiced Utah elk carpaccio, cold smoked heirloom tomatoes, miso, pumpernickel, benne seeds
  • “Beef & barley” (entree), Mishima Farms wagyu strip, braised cheeks, roasted garlic, Swiss chard

Moving forward expect to see their famous fried chicken, elk bolognese, shrimp & grits, rabbit pappardelle, Sue’s Maine mussels, and more. Some of the highlighted classics represent a preview of the dishes that will be featured by chef Matt Harris at the JBF event.

Small bites

Aker – This new downtown spot has begun offering a late-night sushi menu, available every Thursday and Friday from 10.00 p.m. to midnight.

Apres Pendry – Every Wednesday from 4.00 – 10.00 p.m. the Pendry’s all-day restaurant space is offering a “Wine Down Wednesday” promotion with weekly wine specials, and tastings.

Arlo – Per this Facebook update, new dishes on the menu include Idaho rainbow trout, and pan-fried new potatoes influenced by the classic Caesar salad.

Dog Haus – With Fall upon us, this hot dog chain is offering a limited-time oktoberwürst bratwurst, served with caramelized onions, grilled sauerkraut, and mustard aioli on King’s Hawaiian rolls. Other items include an oktoberwürst burrito with cheese sausage, as well as King’s Hawaiian pretzel bites. Dog Haus will be donating $1 from every oktoberwürst and oktoberwürst burrito sold to No Kid Hungry.

Goldener Hirsch –  Lunch fondue is now on the menu at a discounted price. Fondue for two is available half-pricing during weekend lunch hours, every Saturday and Sunday, 11.00 a.m. – 2.30 p.m.

Oquirrh – The award-winning downtown restaurant has launched a new Summer menu; a highlight looks to be the charcoal-grilled blue prawns brushed with beef fat and served with yogurt, compressed cucumbers, and chili crunch oil.

Salt Egg City – Always on the hunt for my next burger rec, I spied SLC Eats snap this particularly impressive looking shot of a new burger at SEC. If the restaurant can bring its raison d’etre of SLC’s ultimate breakfast sandwich to their burger – it should be something special.

Snowbasin – A mountain-top brunch is now being served, taking place Sundays from 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. – now through October 6th. The brunch can be enjoyed after taking the Needles Gondola to Needles Lodge. Tickets are $79 for adults, $43 for kids (5-12), and complimentary for children 4 and under.

The Salt Republic – A new Summer menu has rolled out at the Hyatt Regency’s ground floor restaurant. The full menu can be found here.

Ramen Haus – Representatives of the Japanese restaurant reached out to tell me about a dish on the menu, onone they’re pretty proud of – the hiyashi chuka soba. I’m told, “It’s a dish rumored to be created in the 1930s in Sendai Japan, where the 2011 earthquake happened. There are plenty of other theories about where it comes from too. Some say it’s a reflection of Mt. Fuji. But it’s a very traditional Japanese dish that we are really pushing people to try out since it tastes amazing in the summertime. We are one of the first Japanese ramen restaurants that have really pushed the hiyashi chuka, we have customers just call it the cold noodle bowl. It’s like a salad in ramen form.”
