You know the conversation: “You pick, no, you choose, I can’t think of anywhere”. Silence ensues before you slump into routine and go with the same old place. “We won’t do this next time”, is the resolve, “we’ll be better prepared”. Just in time for the weekend then – here’s a look back at what local food writers have been covering the past few weeks.
Alex Springer at the City Weekly visits Yeti (Cottonwood Heights), Puerto Vallarta (Midvale), Mar | Muntanya (Downtown SLC, pictured top), Nacho House (various), Stella Grill (Holladay), and Heaya Ramen & Rice Bowl (South Salt Lake), while also taking a look at vendors at the Ballpark. These are perhaps the last stories from Springer in the Weekly, who is set for pastures new after a near ten-year stint at the publication; he made his goodbyes in this article. Best of luck, Alex!
Other stories in the Weekly include Genevieve Vahl’s piece on chef Ryan Shane, Lily Springer’s look at Kahve Cafe (Downtown SLC), and Aimee Cook’s piece on ‘mina (SLC).
Next up SL Mag, where Darby Doyle gives the lowdown on Sam’s Secret Pizza Club, Harbor Seafood & Steak (SLC), and Taco Culture (American Fork); Doyle also talks sippin in St. George, lists ten lunch handhelds, and speaks to the folks at Pretty Bird. Lydia Martinez meanwhile waxes lyrical on dishes at Osteria Amore (University), and Iceberg Drive Inn (SLC).
Over in SLUG Mag, a quartet of pieces with Carlysle Price writing about Weller’s Bistro (Ogden) Rebekah Bowman at O’ Falafel (Sugar House), Katrina Cano on Rico Foods, and Kyle Forbush detailing Este Pizzeria (Sugar House).
Ted Scheffler in Utah Stories hits up Momomaru (Downtown SLC), while colleagues Heather L. King talks about the latest iteration of Fiddler’s (Sugar House), and Golda Hukic-Markosian checks out Fogo de Chao (Midvale), and STK (Downtown SLC)
At the Deseret News, Sarah Gambles gets to grips with ‘mina (SLC), Fini Pizza (Utah City), and speaks to Travis Herber of Felt (Downtown SLC). Lastly, in Utah Business, Abi Falin Horspool looks at businesses with food truck starts, and Park Record’s Cannon Taylor checks out Nom Nom Thai (Heber City).

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you!  I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC.  I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City  dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV.  Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune.   I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand.  What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
