Looking to get out of your dining rut? Check out new local deal dining website: www.favoriteeats.com/club_beta.
Created by Utahn Glen Womble – his startup combines two of his passions, food and technology. Via email, Glen explained to me:
“I created FavoriteEats because I love restaurants, love eating out, and love getting rewarded for my loyalty, but have always hated loyalty cards! So, I set out to create something better, and the feedback has been fantastic.
The idea is that a consumer can join the club and pay a small monthly fee of $5 per month. In return, each month they will get a meal/dessert/etc (worth $8-$12) at one of our places they have never been to before. It’s a fun and inexpensive way to try new places!”.
While I’ve not had time to personally test the service, the first month is free to new users and has an ever expanding roster of tasty businesses currently including the likes of Melty Way and Les Madeleines. I’m told its a no strings attached deal and you can cancel at any time. Moreover, if you can’t make it to the restaurant you chose in a given month – no problem, the deals never expire. Readers who take advantage of that freebie first month – let us know what you think.
Did you know Frida Bistro recently turned four years old? Who would have known Utahns would have taken this fine dining Mexican eatery to their hearts the way they have. It certainly doesn’t hurt owner Jorge Fierro is a passionate local advocate and supporter of several local causes.
To my mind, one of the key factors behind their success has been the consistent focus on not just great food but a great experience, from decor to drinks. After all, the best meals are always a celebration of sorts. With that in mind, be sure to mark April 2nd in your calendar, when Frida Bistro host Wahaka Mezcal, pairing a five course meal with select wines and Wahaka Mezcal.
Also, stay tuned for an upcoming story on their four years in business here on GSLC.

Aidan’s Apple Sauce
And finally, a quick shout out to Aidan, proud author of www.aidansapplesauce.com – who contacted me recently, asking if I could mention his blog.
I rarely call out specific bloggers, Utah has such a profusion of online writers, that’s all I’d ever write about. But when’s the last time you met a ten year old food blogger? No, me neither – such early dedication to quality cuisine is surely worth mention and merit. Best of luck to your food blogging career Aidan, may it be a tasty and rewarding one!
Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
