Alex Springer in the City Weekly takes in five dining destinations this past month, Drunken Kitchen being a particular stand out. You can read what I think of their fried chicken wings in this one too. Other names include stops at Blind Rabbit Kitchen, Seven Brothers Burgers (City Creek location pictured top), Contento Cafe, and Aker; the latter, the new swanky Japanese-forward restaurant in downtown SLC. Aker was recently opened by the team behind Ruby River Steakhouse/Hoppers – lavishly revamping the former Maxwell’s space.
In Salt Lake Magazine, Lydia Martinez gets to grips with the Utah scone. Martinez also discusses open-flame cooking with chef John Mucko, and speaks to Alta Club veteran John Hiner, on what three decades behind the storied bar looks like.
In Utah Stories, Ted Scheffler tackles Canyons Village, also taking a closer look at the Pendry situated KITA. Pendry? Here’s everything you need to know about one of the newer Summit County resorts. Scheffler also drops in on the Kevin Finch residency at The Ruin. Finch has been popping up here and there for months now, with word on the street that it’s all leading up to a permanent spot for the talented chef. A reminder, a past ephemeral appearance by Finch was one of the best meals I enjoyed in 2022. Also in Utah Stories, Bianca Dumas heads down to Escalante, and Heather L. King runs down the details on four food trucks.
In the Trib, Kolbie Peterson ranks three chicken sandwiches while declaring Ramen Ichizu the best she’s ever tasted. Peterson also continues her ongoing exploration of Redwood Road, highlighting these five picks. Habibi Grill in particular is a favorite of mine, here’s my take on their tastebud-smacking lamb shinwari karahi.
Wrapping up the month Axios Kim Bojórquez dines at La Cevicheria, Ryan Aston explores Riverdale’s Ichiban Sushi, and Christian Ledek in SLUG gets to grips with the Scottish dishes at The Bruce. On the box, ABC4 features Sagato Bakery, Contento Cafe, and Milly Chalet, while FOX13 highlights Aker.

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.

Hi,
Thank you for highlighting the wonderful places to eat in Escalante Utah. Often these hidden gems don’t get a lot of the recognition they so deserve. One of those gems is Magnolia’s Kitchen in Escalante. They serve breakfast and lunch, which has delicious items on their menu. The coffee and pastries are made daily, including the long lost spudnut!!! The story of the owners, Haylee and Garin, is remarkable and would be a great story for your readers. Please check it out sometime! Thank you, Patti
