The latest Salt Lake Tribune review is over at Chanon Thai Cafe. One of the first dishes Vanessa Chang samples are the Cream Cheese Wontons, that would normally set alarm bells ringing for me. Vanessa and her dining companion seem to be very impressed overall though, thoroughly enjoying the dishes they work through.

Ted Scheffler of the City Weekly checks out the Garden Cafe in the Grand America Hotel. Ted tries the “Summer Saturdays” attraction, effectively an up scale buffet.
Buffets are completely anathema to me. From the fanciest arrays of seafood, to the lowliest of the low, I cannot bare food-free-for-alls. That said, they do seem to be massively popular here in Utah. The Grand America’s offering is partly in response to the hotels main restaurant not faring too well. I’m not sure how well the buffet will fare at a hefty $45 per head.

In Utah This Week sends Amanda Chamberlain to Fratelli Ristorante in Sandy. Amanda and her dining guests seem to be quite unimpressed by the food. Amanda’s opinion on the food are quite different to those of the last review I read by Ted Scheffler of the City Weekly. If I remember rightly Ted was mainly positive in his feedback, aside from a quibble here and there.
Amanda’s review is also sufficient to provoke a few website comments, notably one purporting to be from one of the restaurant owners, Pete Canella.

Also with a review this week is Lyndsey Kocher, of About.com. Lyndsey dines at The Other Place noting of the name, “The Other Place used to stand next to a bar named ‘The Place.’ Now, the bar is renamed Andy’s and the joke in the name has been lost.”. One of these days I will have to run the rule over them also. I have quite the unhealthy obsession with Gyro’s.

Still on the topic of spit-roasted meat, Your Heart Out are down in Provo, dining at Pastorero Taco Grill. Pastorero serve Tacos Al Pastor, which is essentially a gyro like meat, utilising Mexican seasoning’s. The last I read about this delicious sounding meat was in the Deseret Morning News, when Trompos Mexican Grill was reviewed. Given my gyro addiction I’d love to hear from anyone who has tasted al pastor meat here in SLC.

Hot on the heels of their Cemita discovery a week ago, Sopes are the order of the over at Sense and Memory. The sopes come from one of their favourite Taco Stands (Tacos el Jaripeo), which they also talk a little about. It’s posts like this that make me wish I worked much closer to some killer street food vendors.

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
