Proper Brewing Co: – Proper’s recently expanded brewery operations are now starting to generate a buzz of activity – with three new brews coming online this month. Firstly, Proper Brewing Co‘s Ainsley Amber Ale is now on sale.
The release party for the beer is tomorrow evening, September 9th, held in conjunction with local nonprofit Heart & Soul. Here’s a description of the beer, courtesy of head honcho brewer Rio Connelly:
Brewed in honor of local non-profit organization Heart & Soul, this beer brings a unique twist to a traditional amber ale. By using Colorado-malted buckwheat, a grain-like seed more closely related to rhubarb, and a Belgian-style yeast, we’ve added rich earthy and fruity flavors to compliment the full-bodied amber base. The result has a nutty tang, a malty middle and a dry, dark chocolate finish. This amber ale is imminently drinkable and surprisingly refreshing. Try it with our Proper Burger!
Two more brews, Mabon and Triple Stamp will debut this month as well, with release parties on September 22nd and 30th respectively.
Also keep your eyes peeled for Proptoberfest, the very first annual 2-day outdoor German-style event on Saturday, September 24th and Sunday, September 25th.
Held at the businesses new facilities on Main street, the event feature a beer garden, live music, German food, games and activities for adults and kids, and last but not least – an exclusive collaboration beer brewed with Epic. More info to follow as details are announced.

Epic Brewing Sugar House – Finally, news just in that The Annex By Epic is set to shutter. Lovers of Epic needn’t fret though, the update is more re-orientation and re-branding than closure. The new business is set to be known as Epic Brewing Sugar House.
The move makes sense in my mind, despite some excellent cuisine in parts over the past few years, patrons seemed to expect a more direct extension of the brewery brand, rather than a dining experience. Hold the food, pour me a cold one.
The update sets to address this experiential mismatch – with the focus now on the breweries range of brews first and foremost. As Utah Beer Blog puts it, “If you’re a fan of Epic’s beers and haven’t visited Epic – Sugar House, it is in my opinion the best way to enjoy Epic’s complete line of beers. Yeah, Epic’s Tapless Taproom at the downtown brewery is tiny, quaint and close to the brewing action. However I’d like to emphasize the “tiny part”. A party of four is pretty much filling up the place.”
The reworked business will retain The Annex’s patio, the large and comfortable indoor space and also the cold case featuring Epic’s award winning brews, available to go seven days a week.
Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
