Goodbye, gourmet burgers
Reported this week by the Tribune’s Kath Stephenson: “After three years in business, Acme Burger Co., 275 S. 200 West, Salt Lake City, has closed. Last month, a local law office posted a sign on the front door saying owners owed back rent. The restaurant’s telephone also has been disconnected.”
Utah Bakers Dozen “Savory Tart and Real Salt”
On November 8th (4:00 to 6:00) join the “Utah Bakers Dozen” group of baking professionals and home baking enthusiasts as they gather to exchange information in a quest for knowledge and excellence.
Utah’s own award winning pastry chef and cookbook author “Mary Cech” will present The Savory Tart demo (and sampling). The focus will be the handling of tart doughs from the easiest to the most difficult. Mary will be making fall inspired tarts. Mary’s dynamic career has taken her into the nation’s finest kitchens, including Charlie Trotter’s where she served as pastry chef for two years helping the Chicago restaurant raise its level of excellence from a 3-star to a 4-star rated restaurant.
Mary has won prestigious recognition twice as one of the “Top Ten Pastry Chefs in America” by Chocolatier Magazine and was named “Pastry Chef of the Year” by Chefs in America. Her new cookbook “Savory Baking” will be available for purchase. Real Salt of Redmond, Utah will do an educational tasting of their salts. Prices are $10 in advance.

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
