Park City Cocktail Contest – Looking to beat the summer heat? Might I suggest a trip to the cooler climes of Park City and while you’re at it a refreshing beverage or two for good measure. If you do, you’re in for a treat as this month sees the return of the annual Summer Cocktail Contest.
Through July 31st, guests of participating restaurants can check out their unique creations and vote online for their top picks. Twenty six restaurants are competing this year, with votes being cast over on the Park City Restaurant Associate website: https://parkcityrestaurants.com/contest/park-city-cocktail-contest/
Mixologist Jeff LaBounty of Silver Star Café won the 2016 contest with the “LaBounty Bourbon Ice Bomb.” The sipper was a fusion of Sugar House Bourbon, Warre’s Otima 10-Year-Old Tawny Port, Bianca Vermouth, house-made balsamic organic cane syrup, black-walnut bitters and peach bitters. The mixture was carefully funneled into a hollowed ice sphere, only to be broken table-side with a small mallet, transforming the cocktail from a globe of liquid to a refreshing drink on the rocks.
The winning cocktail and its creator will be featured in a marketing campaign following the contest leading into PCARA’s popular Fall “Dine About” event. He or she will also receive a $200 cash prize and city-wide recognition from a destination known for its award-winning bar and restaurant scene. This year’s participants include:

Taste Of The Wasatch 2017 – If you didn’t see our preview for Taste Of The Wasatch 2017, be sure to go check it out, and yes, get tickets ASAP. At the time of press only a handful of tickets for the VIP area remain, which include guaranteed, covered seating and early access to the event at 11 a.m.
In addition to our first post about the event, I’ve now seen a list of this years silent auction prizes and can confirm what the organizers have been telling me: it’s the best ever line up of prizes in the event’s history. Some highlights for foodies from the nearly 100 items on auction include:
* Private dinner for 12, libations included with Tupelo Chef/Owner Matt Harris
* 2 gift certificates for sushi-making lessons for 2; handmade sushi plate set; organic soy sauce; chopstick gift set; tea; tea cups at Soy’s Sushi
* Outlaw Distillery basket with distillery tour for 2; t-shirts, and bottle of whiskey and whiskey stones
* Whole hog breakdown class with take-home results for 6 people with Beltex Meats’ Philip Grubisa
* Private tasting event for up to 20 people at Mountain Town Olive Oil
* One night deluxe accomodations at Hotel Monaco with Bambara gift certificate
The list goes on and on with plenty of non food items as well (everything from signed sports memorabilia to holidays), but if you want to see them all you’ll just have to head up to Solitude with the rest of us on August 6th. And if you do, remember proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction benefit 100% Utah based charities that fight hunger locally. Every penny stays locally and every dollar you spend makes a real difference. And I guarantee you delicious food while you’re flexing your philanthropic muscles. Just look at some more of the dishes recently announced:
* Chedda Burger – cherry tomato jam, Thai peanut sauce, confit porkbelly, cream cheese and arugula on a beef patty
* Pallet Bistro – hamachi with pressed melon salad, local greens and chile verde vinaigrette
* Tin Angel Cafe – “Angels with Dirty Faces”: Medjool date stuffed with gorgonzola picante wrapped in speck
* Lake Effect – Chipotle BBQ beef nacho with charred corn salsa, crumbled cotija, and pickled radish

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
