Proper Brewing Co – During the last week the brewery released this year’s batch of their draft colonial porter. Named Sassy Molassy it’s essentially the same as last years brew with extra molasses thrown in for good measure – stop by the brewery now to sample it. Last years version of the brew was title “Halfway to Concord” – apparently colonial-era slang for getting drunk – and coincidentally my new favorite phrase I’ll be bandying around all Summer long.
Also now pouring from the Proper team, two new brews courtesy of older sibling Avenues Proper:
* Hop vs Hop release #7, a rotating beer that features a different combination of two aromatic hops with each release. The two hops in this version are Eureka and Simcoe, and it comes in at around 8.2% ABV.
* New Zealand Lager, brewed with Idaho Pilsner malt and Dr Rudi and Rakau hops from New Zealand. As Eleanor Lewis of the brewery puts it, “Despite being a lager, it was pouring pretty hazy after tapping it, but we’ll see if it brightens up at all as it settles. This beer is dangerously crushable – I can definitely see putting away a few of these on the patio while it lasts. Like everything we brew up here, this one is exclusive to Avenues Proper.”

Waterpocket Distillery – SLC’s newest distillery will have its grand opening and open house on Friday and Saturday, June 2nd-3rd, 2017 from 11am to 7pm at their facility in West Valley City, UT. The distillery is named after the Waterpocket Fold, Capitol Reef National Park’s primary geological formation. In their own words:
One focus for the distillery will be reinventing Long Lost™ liqueurs from the golden age of the 19th century French, German, and Italian botanical liqueurists. Another focus will be on rum production using U.S. grown sugar cane and molasses. The distillery also has plans to develop products from Utah’s large fruit industry.
The first Long Lost™ liqueurs planned for launch illustrate the broad range of possible liqueur styles. One is a complex botanical spirit called OREAD (after the Greek mythology spirits of the mountains and valleys) from the former free city of Danzig (now Gdańsk), home of legendary liqueur Goldwasser. The other is an amaro called NOTOM, inspired by a classic kräuterlikör (tr. herbal liqueur) from the frontier between Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The challenging amaros, kräuterlikörs, and similar products produced by Waterpocket distillery will be released under their Toadstool™ brand. In the spirit of the unspoiled country of the Capitol Reef area, and since many of these products will challenge traditional tastes and expectations, the distillery has adopted the slogan OPEN WILD™. They will also release a line of curated spirits under the Robbers Roost™ label, starting with a 9-year-old light whiskey.
Waterpocket Distillery is owned by Julia and Alan Scott. Julia Scott brings a background in chemical engineering, a PhD in biochemistry and an MBA from the University of Utah to the enterprise. Alan’s 20 years as a homebrewer translates into his position as head distiller & COO of the distillery. A pair of custom-designed German copper pot stills form the heart of the distillery.
Formal tours will be available by appointment soon.

“The overwhelming response to our gins and requests from our customers motivated us to create a pure, velvety vodka to add to our arsenal,” says Beehive co-founder Chris Barlow. “We start out with pure organic sugar cane for a lighter, cleaner flavor that makes it a perfect base for cocktails, or savored neat.”
You’ll have seen Beehive Vodka at bars and restaurants throughout Salt Lake City, with notable specialty cocktails served at Manoli’s and The Ruin – and now Utah residents can purchase this high quality vodka home for home use too.

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
