It’s a surer sign of Spring than Punxsutawney Phil for my money. Nope, it’s not my trusty farmer’s almanac – it’s actually the increasing preponderance of food festival news hitting my desk. Any day now I’ll have the full lowdown on the full roster of events to keep an eye on this Spring and Summer – but in the interim here’s a fun looking one to kick off the season.
April 8th is the date for this intriguing looking bash, now in its third year. Held at the Salt Lake City based Square Kitchen (751 W 800 S.) the day starts at 11.00 a.m. and runs through 10.00 p.m. During those house expect to see the following vendors rock up to satisfy your stuffed pastry cravings:
- Delicius
- Namash Swahili Cuisine
- Jamaica’s Kitchen
- Table 22
- Argentina’s Best Empanadas
- Prime Corn
- Kafe Mamai
Also on hand to pour some refreshing pairings will be Z Nectar and Fisher Brewing. You probably know plenty about the sudsy latter – but the former, I first stumbled over at last year’s Craftoberfest in South Salt Lake City. Z Nectar offer a refreshingly bright craft beverage, a variety of Caribbean flavor profiles based on family recipes. You can already find it at specialty stores like Liberty Heights and Central 9th Market. One taste of the original lime flavor and I guarantee you’ll grab a few bottles for your Summer BBQ setup. Guaranteed.
Anyway, back to the empanada fest, the organizers write, “In 2021, we proudly celebrated the First Annual Empanada Fest in Salt Lake City. Some call it empanadas, some samosas and others patties. Wherever they may be from, they all have a special and tasty twist to their flavor and we wanted to celebrate and unite us all with what we do best, through food. We are so proud to be supporting ethnic owned businesses and featuring Fisher Brewery.”
No word on prices yet, but I’ll update this post as more details get wrapped up.

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.
