As we wrote about yesterday, The Gateway has added a new Sunday gospel brunch event that promises, “your typical Sunday brunch, with a whole lot more soul.” The recurring bash is just one of an increasing line up, as new owners Vestar look to re-energize and re-imagine what The Gateway can be. And we’ve got three pairs of tickets to giveaway. Read on for how to enter and win.
If you’ve stopped by recently you might have already noted several improvements made to the property, a fresh lick of paint here, improved lighting there. Expect to see the activity gather pace as the weather improves and more tasks can be tackled; the artist sketches I saw for various upgrades seemed kinda cool. There’s a lot in store for the property, watch this space.
Right now though, we’re here to talk about brunch – one of many events that The Gateway team hope will put the facility on the map as an entertainment hub of sorts; as their marketing team put it to me – a place where people want to spend time. Expect to see everything from free family movie nights, yoga classes, comedy festivals, concert series and more.
The gospel brunch is presently being held every other Sunday inside the Gateway’s dramatic Grand Hall (10 a.m. to 1 p.m). Of special note is a bloody Mary bar fueled by Tito’s vodka and music by the Debra Bonner Unity Gospel Choir. Brunch bites are provided by Cubby’s while 3 Cups Coffee are bringing the caffeine. The next events are planned for April 23, May 7 and 21, 2017.
Tickets cost $19 per person for brunch, with an additional $6 charge for two drinks at the Bloody Mary bar – additional drink tickets are just $3 each. Proceeds also benefit Downtown SLC Presents, a local non-profit dedicated to promoting cultural and artistic experiences in downtown Salt Lake City.
“Salt Lake City has a really cool food scene, so we wanted to do something different, with a lot more soul,” says Edie Trott, marketing manager at The Gateway. “We wanted to fill up Sundays with as much life as we could, so getting a gospel brunch together felt like a great way to kick it off.”
To enter our giveaway and stand a chance at snagging a pair of tickets, simply comment on this post and let us know, “What’s your essential brunch go to dish?”. For a second entry and a better chance at winning, make sure you’re also subscribed to our email list as well – we’ll put your name in the hat twice. You’ll find the signup form to our email list on the top right hand side of the page.
We’ll pick three lucky winners on May 3rd and reach out directly via email. Each winner will receive two tickets to their choice of either the May 7th or May 21st event. Please note the gospel brunch is a 21+ only event.
Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC. I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have written in myopic detail about the Salt Lake City dining scene for the better part of seventeen years.
I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV. Pause those credits, yep, that’s me! I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. What they’re saying about me: “Not inaccurate”, “I thought he was older”, “I don’t share his feelings”.

Mimosas ?
Eggs Benedict, never steered me wrong!
Eggs Benedict
Eggs Benedict. Every time.
My go-to is standard eggs and potatoes with a good cup of coffee and occasionally some crisp bacon.
Bloody Mary! It can be a meal all on it’s own 😉
A cheesy omelette. And coffee. And diner toast with butter.
Mimosas are essential for Sunday Brunch! Can’t go wrong with anything brunch related!
Biscuits and Gravy
I love a great spicy breakfast burrito, mimosas are always welcome.
Vegetarian Chicken and waffles 🙂
Soft boiled egg, smoked salmon w/ thinly sliced red onions, capers, cream cheese on multigrain toast. Sometimes mix it up with proscuitto wrapped Asparagus in place of the smoked salmon and capers…
Foie gras and a nice Sancerre. A girl can dream right?
Essential brunch food usually depends on the previous nights activities, but always includes a poached egg or two atop anything starchy, a side of crispy bacon, and a couple Bloody Mary’s..
Bloody Marys! Gotta have at least one!
Smoked salmon and sparkling wine.
Mimosas & waffles with strawberries and whipped cream
Spanish omelet with a side of chili verde
Without question, Chilaquiles! Delicious and provides the necessary nutrients to allow multiple Bloody Mary’s.
Strawberries & marscapone whipping cream, bloody mary’s, smoked salmon with loads and loads of capers
Roasted asparagus wrapped in prosciutto and covered in parmesan shavings with eggs benedict and a mimosa — then I’m in brunch heaven!!!
Breakfast sandwiches and mimosas for sure.
Mimosas and anything makes for a perfect Sunday
